Welcome to Kuching Travel Guide!
I hope this simple Kuching Travel Guides will give you some idea on how to plan your trip in Kuching. Basically “Kuching”, in Malay, means cat, so we always refer Kuching as “Cat’s City”. But don’t get it wrong, it just like a nickname, doesn’t mean Kuching has lots of cat wandering around the city. Just like Singapore, which always refer it as Lion’s City, does it means that lots of lion hanging around in Singapore?
Kuching is a capital of Sarawak, & also a main gateway where most travelers start their journey right here, to the remaining part of Sarawak. If you are planning to travel to the whole Sarawak, you can always start your journey from Kuching & end your Sarawak expedition in Miri – the second most developed city in Sarawak, after Kuching. It is also a second gateway to Sarawak, which flights are only connected from Kuala Lumpur, at time of writing.

i plan to visit Kuching on 13 June 2010 with a group of 3 adults and 4 kids(below 12). i plan to stay at the long house to experience the Iban’s culture, jungle trekking, visit the caves and maybe half day tour in the town area.
Please advise
Hi Cindy, if you plan to visit the most authentic Iban longhouse, you will have to travel to Kapit area (then upriver on Rejang), I mean if you have more time in Sarawak. You need at least a whole day to get to the Kapit, which you will take coach from Kuching to Sibu (half day gone), then boat to Kapit, when arrive at Kapit, the freelance tour operators will approach you to offer their longhouse tour (remember to negotiate the price), generally you will travel upriver by traditional Iban long boat (at your own risk though, so have your insurance covered). If you really take the effort to go all the way there, you will witness the most traditional & authentic Iban longhouses & their traditional way of living.
If you have not much of time, & especially travel with kids, you can simply visit Bidayuh longhouse at Annah Rais village, that only take you 1.5 hour drive from Kuching. For more info about Annah Rais, simply visit http://www.longhouseadventure.com. It’s easier to get there & at much cheaper in terms of your cost of traveling.
As for caves, you can visit wind cave & fairy cave, both near to Kuching. Please remember to bring along your torchlight. You can hire a 10-seater Van for your whole day tour at RM280 per day (pls call Simon at 016-7222591 in the day time). You can do the Kuching tour same day too after returning from the caves in the afternoon.
Hope it helps. Thanks. Lester
